Special Exercises Classes for Expectant And New Moms

Exercise classes specially designed for the woman who is expecting a baby and the woman who has just given birth, are now being offered at Evolutions Fitness and Rehab.

“A mother who is in good physical shape usually has an easier time of delivery,” said Dr. Istvan Potorke, an OB/GYN who is medical director for the OB department at Tulare District Hospital.

The prenatal and post partum fitness and exercise classes began this month, said Michelle Giannola, group exercise coordinator at Evolutions. “I’m always excited to offer fitness programs to the public. Pregnancy is hard enough as it is. Exercising makes the day go by faster and it can diminish morning sickness,” said Giannola.

According to Babycenter.com, the average women who is in good health and normal weight, gains about 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. That weight, and any extra, has many affects on the body, including body aches, especially to the backs and legs.

The web site recommends exercise to keep one’s weight in check, and exercise after birth to get back to their pre-pregnancy weight. Most women, according to the web site, lose half of that weight in the first six weeks.

Giannola, Andreia Richardson and Ellen Rockholm have been certified to teach the special exercise class that focuses on cardiovascular health, strength training and stretching. Members will also be taught on proper body mechanics and posture. The classes are offered in the morning five days a week. Giannola said the therapy and exercise pools are being utilized, as well as the equipment in the fitness center.

Moms can begin the class as soon as they know they are pregnant and as long as needed after birth. Fees will be frozen for the six weeks after birth when they cannot take the class.

Cost is only $28 a month, plus there is no enrollment fee to join. A physician’s approval to take the class is requested. For more information call Evolutions at 685-3800.
